9 December 2025, Hong Kong SAR, China (Hong Kong) - HKCGI and The Hong Kong Jockey Club (Jockey Club) today co-organised Hong Kong’s first International Symposium on Sports Governance and Integrity at Happy Valley Racecourse. The event gathered more than 160 participants, including global speakers, representatives from national sports associations, members of the Sports Governance and Integrity Alliance committees and HKCGI members.
At the event, Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR Government said a sound governance framework not only guides how organisations make critical decisions and establishes appropriate checks and balances, but also ensures national sports associations always act in the best interests of their organisations and athletes. She especially thanked the Jockey Club and HKCGI for echoing the Government’s call to enhance corporate governance in sports. This team effort will not only benefit athletes, support the sports professionals and promote the sustainable development of sports, but also strengthen Hong Kong’s influence in the global sports arena.
HKCGI President, David Simmonds FCG HKFCG, remarked, “we share a common belief that good governance is the foundation of sustainable success, whether it be business, public service or sport.” He highlighted the forthcoming Sports Governance Certification Course, which like the Symposium comes under the Jockey Club HKCGI Sports Governance Programme. Launching in early 2026, this Course will provide free training to national sports associations and their members, equipping them with practical governance tools, insights and standards aligned with international best practices.
In her closing remarks, Gill Meller FCG HKFCG(PE), International Vice President of The Chartered Governance Institute and HKCGI Past President, reflected on the Symposium’s takeaways, stating: “Together, we are building a governance ecosystem that will enable Hong Kong sport to grow with integrity, confidence and purpose.”
The annual symposiums are part of the Jockey Club HKCGI Sports Governance Programme, one of two key initiatives to enhance governance, operational capability and transparency within Hong Kong national sports associations. The programme is supported with the aid of an approved donation of over HK$31 million from the Jockey Club’s Charities Trust. The programme will engage international experts and foster networking and experience-sharing opportunities with a long-term goal of positioning Hong Kong as a leader in sports governance.
